RSAF and DSTA Complete Technical Evaluation of F-16 Replacement

Image
18 Januari 2019 RSAF should purchase a small number of F-35 JSF for a full evaluation (photo : Medium) The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) have completed their technical evaluation to select the next generation fighter to replace its F-16s. The F-16s will have to retire soon after 2030 and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has been identified as the most suitable replacement to maintain the RSAF's capabilities. However, the technical evaluation also concluded that the RSAF should first purchase a small number of F-35 JSFs for a full evaluation of their capabilities and suitability before deciding on a full fleet. In the next phase, MINDEF will discuss details with relevant parties in the US before confirming its decision to acquire the F-35 JSFs for Singapore's defence capabilities. ( Sing Mindef )

US Army Picks BAE and GD For MPF Light Tank Prototypes: Upstart SAIC Is Out

23 Desember 2018 BAE Armored Gun System.(photo : BAE) The Army picked its two traditional armored vehicle manufacturers, General Dynamics and BAE Systems, to build contending prototypes for its Mobile Protected Firepower light tank, the service announced today. Each company will get up to $376 million to build 12 prototypes, with delivery starting in 14 months and testing in 16. In 2022, the Army will pick a final winner to build a planned 504 vehicles. Cut from the competition today was upstart SAIC and its Singaporean partner STK. It’s the second swing and a miss for SAIC, which lost the Marine Corps Amphibious Combat Vehicle to BAE earlier this year. SAIC has a strong record on roadside-bomb resistant trucks — the famous MRAPs — but its efforts to break into the market for full-scale armored fighting vehicles have been rebuffed so far. Instead, the Army’s turned to its traditional vendors, with a $375.9 million award to BAE and $335 million to General Dynamics Land Systems. A Mo...

Proposal to Base Singapore F15 Fighter Jets at Ōhakea Rejected

Image
22 Desember 2018 F-15SG aircraft (photo : Jaryd Stock) A proposal to base Singapore jets at Ōhakea has been rejected because of infrastructure problems at the airbase.  Minister of Defence Ron Mark said both sides concluded the proposal could not proceed, as without significant spending Ōhakea could not host the F15 squadron. Mark said the concept had received strong support from local and central government and he was disappointed at the outcome. "I took a hard look at official advice on multiple aspects of the proposal throughout the year." Mark said locating the jets there on a long-term basis would have put significant strain on the capacity of the airfield and the airspace above it. "Singapore also concluded that cost parameters were a factor." In February last year, the New Zealand Defence Force confirmed officials were in talks to set up a pilots' training base at Ōhakea. F16 fighter jets came to Ōhakea in September 2017 and officials were optimistic at t...

17 Desember 2018 Singapore Army's Very Slender Vessel (photos : Alert5) The Singapore Armed Forces is testing a stealthy new combatant craft that appears to be optimised for special operations. The combatant craft could be a replacement for the Singapore Army's Very Slender Vessel. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is quietly testing a stealthy new high-speed combatant craft that appears to be designed specifically for commando infiltration/extraction and special operations, according to open source imagery reviewed by Jane's in early December. The images depict a light gray, twin-step planing monohull watercraft - evidently designed to optimise efficiency and stability at high speeds - with a length and beam of approximately 18 m and 4 m respectively, featuring a low-profile but fully enclosed crew cabin with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) ensign painted amidships on the port and starboard sides, and an open aft-working deck.
